Transparency is very important to me, so here's the honest version of how this site works.

Lingtuitive is a for-profit website and my full-time work. Many of the posts here contain affiliate links — when you buy an app or course through one of them, I earn a commission. That's what makes doing this full-time possible.

I've intentionally kept Lingtuitive ad-free. I think ads clutter the page and ruin the reading experience — and a clean, enjoyable read is the whole point of this site.

A few things I want to be completely clear about:

Buying through an affiliate link never costs you more. The price is exactly the same as going direct, and in many cases my links get you a discount or a longer free trial that you won't find on the company's own site.

I only recommend tools I've used myself. I take the course, use the app, fold it into my own language learning, and watch whether it actually helps — usually for months, sometimes years, before I write about it. I don't think you can write honestly about something you haven't lived with. And I try to be clear about who I think each tool is for, and who it isn't for.

There's one exception worth naming: in roundups for a particular language — the best resources for Finnish, for example — I sometimes include something I've gone through and assessed carefully but haven't used in my own learning of that specific language. Usually it's a product I've used properly in another language, so I know how it works and where it falls short. What I can't give you is my own experience of learning that language with it. When that's the case, I try to say so in the post.

I've paid for most of this myself. Over the years I've spent thousands of dollars of my own money on apps, courses and lessons across the languages I've learned. For most of my journey I paid for everything, and I still pay for plenty of it today.

Some companies now give me free access so I can test their products properly. Sometimes I approach them, sometimes they approach me. Either way, free access buys testing — not a recommendation. Some of the products I've been given access to never ended up in a post at all for that very reason, and some of the tools I recommend most are ones I've paid for out of my own pocket for years.

Some of what I recommend earns me nothing at all. If the best tool for a particular language or situation has no affiliate program or is free, it still goes in the post. Commission rates also vary a lot between companies, and they have no influence on the order things appear in or how highly I rate them.

I turn down affiliate offers regularly. Recommending a product I don't believe in would pay once and cost me the one thing I'm not willing to trade: my integrity.
