Many language apps (Pimsleur, Pod 101, etc.) use short conversations to teach you the language—a great way to get bite-sized learning while still getting real language. If you want the deepest listening comprehension gains and you’re willing to invest, Spanish Uncovered is it.
The story-based, “repetitive listening” method trains your ears to understand Spanish. Which trains you to not be lost in conversations with native speakers. However, compared to Rocket Languages it’s not as a beginner friendly in terms of instant gratification, and it takes a leap of faith in the method since it’s backwards from the usual school approach.
If you do use it, the learning method works longterm for intermediate and beyond—which means you don’t need to change your learning approach at the upper beginner/lower intermediate plateau like with other methods.

My Experience

This is an incredible free resource (paid option unlocks more content) to train your listening comprehension. It offers more than a thousand free videos, completely in Spanish, with level ranging from Super Beginner to Advanced.
Who it's for
Budget-conscious learners

People who've done at least 4-8 weeks of structured course/app

My Experience
After 1-2 months of foundation work, I started watching Dreaming Spanish. It was an amazing way to start training my listening comprehension in an engaging way. Spanish learners all over have seen tons of success using it.
However, I do think progress is quite slow if you do nothing else than watching easier videos so I’ve always used reading and speaking tools alongside. And at some point at intermediate you’ll see diminishing returns—but before that, it’s amazing.
When to Add This
My recommendation: Add Dreaming Spanish after 4-8 weeks of structured learning (Rocket/Storylearning/Pimsleur). This way you recognize some words and the input feels more productive.
That said: You can start on day 1 if you want (Dreaming Spanish themselves recommends this.) Some learners love pure input from the start. I prefer building a foundation first.
Can you use ONLY Dreaming Spanish? Sure, and some do. But it takes hundreds and hundreds of hours to reach intermediate. I recommend pairing it with at least one more structured resource.

5. Pimsleur — Best On-the-Go Learning
Pricing: $20/mo (one language)
If you’re super busy, have a long commute, or want to practice while multitasking—this is a classic language learning method.
It’s been around forever and uses 30-min audio-based lessons based on a short dialogues. This dialogue is then broken down and prompts you to speak the vocabulary through various imaginary scenarios.
Who it's for:
People with commutes/dead time
Learners who want audio-only learning (no screens)
Those who like a structured, repetitive format
Busy multitaskers (walking, driving, dishes)

How it Compares to Rocket Languages
The audio lessons in Pimsleur and Rocket Languages, while not identical, are similar. They both employ the call and response method to help drill new vocab. While Rocket also has written lessons with grammar/language usage, interactive role play feature, targeted practice activities—Pimsleur completely focuses on imaginary scenarios using the vocabulary.
Rocket Languages has more variety and a more comprehensive method, whereas Pimsleur teaches pronunciation a bit better and has an audio-only format (though extras have been added in later years).
With Rocket Spanish you can target practice the conversations through the role-play video calls. With Pimsleur you’re stuck with the 30-minute flow even if you want to repeat something specific.
Choose Pimsleur if you have a long commute and zero time to learn a language. Otherwise, Rocket gives you more bang for your buck and a broader foundation.
Best Way to Use it
Do at least one lesson daily (30 min) during commute, chores—but when you can still focus enough

My Experience
I used Pimsleur when starting Finnish (1 level only) as well as Spanish (I did all 5 levels). It’s a great way to start learning a language, even when you’re busy. Their way of teaching pronunciation backwards is very smart and makes it easier to get the hang of words. It’s easy to do—since you just follow the instructions in the lessons—but it does get a bit boring after a while.
After 2-3 Levels (60-90 lessons) I saw diminishing returns and could have stopped there and move on to something else (but I wanted to finish it just to see whether it was worth it to push through until the end—while it didn’t hurt, it wasn’t necessary)
